Job Safety Analysis
Job Safety Analysis is a procedure of analysing job for the purpose of finding the hazards in each step and developing safety precautions to be adopted.
Job safety analysis is the study of work procedure to determine the mechanical and physical hazards.
which do or could exist and the actions of persons which could result in accidents.

Importance of JSA :
This technique is applicable to all (any) stage of production system
It is best suited (most useful) at the stage of planning, design and starting the process.
It can be used to review (analyze) job method and uncover the hazards
That may have been overlooked
That were noticed subsequently
That were resulted from change of work procedure
It is the first step in hazard or accident analysis and safety training
It is analysis of job with specific requirement of safety in it.
It determines details of each job in terms of duties, skills, abilities, qualification, safety aspects, tools required, methods, sequence of operation and working conditions.
It is useful for routine or repetitive job as well as maintenance and short orders.
Advantages of JSA :
It suggest personal characteristics such as age, sex, ability, skill etc necessary to select write man for write job.
The job breakdown sheets are useful to train new workers
Hazards are noticed before they cause any accident
It suggests preventive measures in advance to avoid accidents.
It helps for planned and effective safety inspection and accident investigation
It suggests improved job methods, positions, actions and work standards.
This can be done by inspection, interview, discussion alone with review with the supervisor & worker
Job safety analysis can be done on :
(1) Individual basis-operator/electrical. Mechanical Technician
(2) Group basis-where several worker work as a team
(3) Operation Basis-safe operating procedure- for machine
(4) Process basis – Equipment and material
JSA divide in four basic steps :
01) Select the job
02) Break the job into steps
03) Identify the hazard and potential accident causes in each step
04) Eliminate the hazard and prevent potential accident (solution / mitigation control measure )
01) Select the job :
New job
Existing job
02)Â Break the job into steps :
The job should be broken into basic step in proper sequences.
Description of the job should give the idea of what is being done.
consider all possibilities of accident, failure mode and effect etc.
- Split the job into elemental operations/processes
- Basic steps should not be left out
- Not to go for too much detailed step
03) IDENTIFY HAZARDS AND POTENTIAL ACCIDENTS IN EACH STEP
Observe closely and examine all possibilities of accidents in each and every step.
Observe the operation as many times as may be required and also have discussion with the operator concerned and others who have knowledge of job.
Develop a complete and reliable list of hazards and accident potential in each step.
Find unsafe Act / Unsafe condition against 5 M’s (man, machine, material, methodology, manufacturing condition)
04)Eliminate the hazard and prevent potential accident (solution / mitigation control measure )
The solution to the hazard in the job may be worked out by Finding a new method or procedure to do the job.
Changing the physical conditions that create a new hazard.
Reducing the necessity or frequency of doing a job that is dangerous.
Suggesting personal protective equipment, if any After operational control to be done in each step are developed, these safety precautions are to be noted in Job Breakdown sheet (job sheet or process sheet), and it should be explained to operators and to be trained to perform job safely.
Give immediate remedy with readily available resources.
Long term solution requiring better planning involving time effort and money.
If accidents are happening in spite of complying the procedure of JSA obviously, need further review.
