Foam Type Fire Extinguisher

Foam type extinguisher are most common type of fire extinguisher for CLASS B fires but also work on class A Fire they are water based.

Label color :Green

Foam extinguisher are use for organic material Ex. Paper, wood, flammable liquid.

Don’t use for kitchen fire, fire involving electric equipment, flammable material, flammable metal.

Foam Extinguisher working colling and smothering method.

It is available in 9 Ltr cylinder and used in 4 to 6 mt range.

It is available in wheel mounted trolley of 18 Ltr and 150 Ltr capacity for longer use

Foam Fire Extinguisher Use : Class A & B fire

Foam Type Fire Extinguisher

There are three type of foam compound :

  • Mechanical Foam
  • Chemical Foam
  • Synthetic Foam

Foam Concentration Types

Type 1:-99% water 1% concentrate

Type 3:-97% water 3% concentrate

Type 6:- 94% water 6% concentrate

Mechanical Foam  are three types

AFFF (Aqueous film forming foam) : A foam concentrate that has a fluorinated surfactant with stabilizing additive and synthetic surfactants foaming agents for Class A and B fires

FFFP (film forming Fluro protein) : A foam concentrate that is protein base with one or more fluorinated surfactant additives for Class A and B fires.

AR-FFF (Alcohol resistance aqueous film forming foam) : A foam concentrate that has a fluorinated surfactant with stabilizing additive of Polysaccharide and synthetic surfactants foaming agents for Class A and B fires.

Chemical Foam

Protein : A foam concentrate that has a hydrolyzed protein base with stabilizing additives suitable for Class A and B fires.

Fluro Proteins : A foam concentrate that is protein base with one or more fluorinated surfactant additives for Class A and B fires.

Foam Fire Extinguisher Specification

Extinguisher media :  Water 94% and 6% Foam

Operating pressure : Nitrogen pressure with 12 Bar

Hydro test  :  35 Bar with in 30 second

Fire fighting range : 2 meter  minimum effective range

This extinguisher working in -5 to 60 degree Celsius.

Minimum Discharge time : 15 second

Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher

This can be used on any class of fire. Therefore it is known as ‘universal type extinguisher’. It is generally used on fire of flammable liquid.

Standard dry powder extinguisher are also called “ A B C “  extinguisher because they tackle class A, B and C fires.

Label Color : Blue

Use for  Organic material, Ex. Paper, cardboard wood

Flammable liquid Ex. Paint, petrol, solvent

Flammable gases Ex. Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and acetylene.

Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher Contain are Mono Ammonium PhosphateSodium Bi-Carbonate and  Ternary Eutectic Chloride.

Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher  Use For CLASS (A B C) Fire.

Dry Powder  Fire Extinguisher Specification

Operating pressure : Nitrogen pressure with 10 to 15 Bar

Extinguisher capacity : 1 kg,  2 kg, 4 kg, 6 kg, 9 kg

Hydro test  :  35  Bar with in  30 Second

Brust pressure :  55  Bar in 1 minutes

Fire fighting range : 2 meter  minimum effective range

This extinguisher working in -30 to 60 degree Celsius.

Co2 Fire Extinguisher

It is useful on class E i.e. electrical fire because CO2 is nonconductive gas.

CO2 extinguisher are predominantly used  for risk and are usually the main fire extinguisher type provided in computer server room and electrical panel room.

Carbon dioxide extinguisher work by displaced oxygen or taking away from the oxygen element of fire tringle.

Carbon dioxide is also very cold as it come out of thew extinguisher so cool the fuel.

Co2 are designed for CLASS B fire or electrical fire  or flammable liquid.

Label color : Black

Use for flammable liquid  Ex. Paint, solvent and petrol, electrical  fires

Do not use for : Kitchen fires Combustible materials Ex. Paper wood or textiles Flammable metals

NOTE : It should not be used on fires of metal, sodium, potassium and metal hydrides.

Co2 Fire Extinguisher Specification

Co2 Extinguisher Pressure : 50 Bar

Extinguisher capacity : 2kgs, 3kgs, 4.5kgs, 6.5kgs, 9kgs, 22.5kgs

Hydro test  :  250 Bar with in  30 Second

Brust pressure : 350 Bar

Cylinder MOC : Aluminum Grade 6061

Fire fighting range : 3-5 feet  minimum effective range

This extinguisher working in -30 to 60 degree Celsius.

All Co2 extinguisher undergo  hydrostatic testing and recharge in every 5 year.

Wet Chemical  Fire Extinguisher

It is not effective on fire of benzene, ether, EO and CS2 For metal fire, special powder extinguishers are available

Wet chemical extinguisher are designed for use on CLASS K fires. Involving cooking oil and fats.

Wet chemical is extinguishes the fire by removing the heat of fire tringle and prevent reignition by creating a barrier between oxygen and fuel element.

Label Color : Yellow

Wet Chemical  Fire Extinguisher Use for cooking oil and fats fire.

Do not use for flammable liquid or gas fires, electrical fire and flammable material.

Halon Fire Extinguisher

Halon 1011, 1211 or 1301 a liquid gas is filled in extinguishers. It is used in place of CO extinguishers but is lighter in comparison.

Halon Fire Extinguisher Use For class B and C fires.

Halon is a fast extinguishing agent. It is ideal for intense and rapid fires. It is non-conductive and leaves no traces when applied. Therefore it is also suitable for electrical fires, computer rooms etc.

Halon is stored under pressure in a cylinder.

A squeeze grip type nozzle is provided on top of the cylinder valve depending upon capacity.

It is available in 2, 4, 5, 25 and 50 kg capacities.

Mostly two types of Halons (halogenated agents) Fire Extinguisher are used :

(1) Halon 1211-Bromochloro difluro methane i.e. CF2BrCI

(2) Halon 1301 – Bromo trifluro methane CF2Br.

Fire Extinguisher PASS Method

Pull the pin : This will allow to discharge the extinguisher.

Aim the base of the fire : Hit the fuel base on fire.

Squeeze the handle : press the button that releases the pressurized extinguisher agent.

Sweep from side to side : until the fire is completely extinguish.

(Note : Extinguisher use from safe distance away 2 meter )

Fire Extinguisher PASS Method

Fire Extinguisher Precautions

  • Never use water to extinguish an electrical fire.
  • Never place anything in front of fire  extinguisher.
  • Fire extinguisher must be inspected  regularly at least once month.

Advantage

It is used to extinguish fire and protect our houses, industries and offices.

It is occupy very less price.

The device is long lasting. extinguisher life is 12 to 15 year. you can also refill other type.

Disadvantage

An user must have a knowledge of extinguisher it should be used.
